About
Hailing from the shores of Oahu, Hawaii, Johann Hedemann is a surfer-songwriter with an island charm. A self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, Johann's sunshine pop is filled with catchy hooks, guitar-focused riffs and conversational vocals.
Growing up between both the North and South Shore, surfing has always been at the heart of his family with his Dad not only a pro surfer back in the 80s, reaching #3 in the world but also the owner of a leading surf school based at the Kaimana Beach Surf Shop near Waikiki. Like his Dad, Johann is a local boy and waterman. It was actually through one of his Dad’s surf shop employees who post-shift was part of a Doors cover band that sparked his interest in music. He would come over weekly to teach him the basics and Johann would soon combine his first chords with his love for poetry from high school leading him to write his first few songs. One evening Johann stumbled on a John Mayer acoustic AOL session on TV and from then he knew songwriting was something he wanted to pursue as a career.
Through his teenage years, failed romantic pursuits fueled his songwriting whilst he had begun to get his feet wet in live performance, playing every night around the island at any open mics he could find. Like Mayer, he soon found himself testing the waters at Berklee’s summer course before enrolling in the full program in 2013 with a focus in songwriting. After taking as many songwriting courses he returned to Hawaii before making the move to LA to begin work on his debut releases as an artist.
Johann has currently released 2 EPs ‘Aloha’ & ‘Mahalo’ with his 3rd ‘Kahala’ coming soon to complete his floral-themed trilogy.
